He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” Mark 5:34

Welcome To The World!

Welcome back to my story! Today, we will discuss the delivery. Since I work from home, I was thankfully able to work throughout my whole pregnancy. I did start my maternity leave two weeks before my scheduled C-Section to have time to prepare and relax before the twins came.
About two weeks before my C-Section, Weston was sick. I took him to the doctor and he tested positive for strep. A week later, I started having an itchy throat and a nagging cough. I told myself that if my throat was still itchy and if I still had a cough the next day, I was going to get checked out because my C-Section was in a week and Weston had just had strep; maybe I had caught it.
I ended up still having a cough and itchy throat the next day so I went to urgent care. They tested me for strep and it came back negative. They sent a throat culture off just to be safe and those results also came back negative. I wouldn’t get those results for about a week so they prescribed me an antibiotic just to be safe. They diagnosed me with an upper respiratory tract infection. My itchy throat finally got better but the cough was still present.
A week later, I finally made it to delivery day! We were so excited to meet our little girls. My C-Section was scheduled for 8 am and we needed to be at the hospital at 6 am. We loaded up our hospital necessities into the car and headed off to the hospital.
We made it safely to the hospital, checked in, and headed up to the room. I changed into the hospital gown and got into bed. Waiting patiently for it to be 8 am. It seemed like time was going by so slowly and I was getting so anxious but so excited to welcome the girls into the world. I tried watching TV to pass the time but that did not help. I just kept staring at the clock.
Finally, it was baby time! I put on my surgical cap, Chris changed into scrubs and I was pushed into the OR on my bed up until a certain point and then walked to the operating table. I remember looking around the room and everything seemed so cold and sterile. I sat on the edge of the table, waiting to receive the spinal block. I was a little nervous as I had an epidural with Weston’s delivery. I was completely worried for nothing! It went smoothly and did not hurt like I thought it would.
The surgical team prepped me, put me on oxygen, and gave me extra warm blankets. My OBGYN and another OBGYN came into the room to start the surgery. Then they brought Chris into the room. It still amazes me how you are completely awake for this surgery without a single feeling in your body aside from the tugging.
Everly (twin A) was welcomed into the world at 8:35 am on February 9th, 2024. She weighed 5 lbs 5 oz. They brought her around the blue drape to show me and I just cried. They took her over to the warmer to make sure she was okay and to get her all cleaned up.
Emery (twin B) was welcomed into the world at 8:38 am. She was 5 lbs 14 oz. When they took Everly out, Emery decided to move into a different position and had her feet up by her head. She was difficult to get out. I remember my whole body moving while they tried to get her to come out. I started getting sick at this point and finally, she was out. During this time, my left shoulder started hurting as well but I just assumed it was from them tugging my body to get her out. Emery had a lot of fluid in her so she didn’t cry right away like Everly did and she had to get a lot of fluid suctioned out of her.
They took her over to the warmer to clean her up and get the fluid out. They wrapped up both girls and brought them over to me to see them, Chris holding one and a nurse holding another.
My little girls were perfect and did not require any NICU time. They closed me up and put me back on my bed. They laid the girls on me. I did have the shakes so I was nervous that I would drop them but so happy to have them in my arms.
They took me back to my room and Chris and I were able to spend time with our daughters and I tried breastfeeding. They did okay with that but I knew it would take some time. Thankfully, I had a nurse who was also a lactation consultant who was able to give me some great advice.
After doing some bonding, we brought Weston in to meet them. I gave Weston a little gift from “the girls” to ease him into this new life he was about to have. After he spent some time with them, my stepdaughter came into the room to meet them. Finally, our families flowed in to meet the newest members of our family. They had been sitting patiently in the lobby with Weston, waiting for their time to meet the girls. Our hearts were so full!
The first day and night after delivery was perfect. My family was complete and my newborns were very healthy. Since they looked just alike and had the same blood type, there was a chance they could be identical Di/Di twins so we decided to get them tested. We would receive those results about a week and a half later.
Weston had never spent a night away from me. To try and keep things normal, we decided that Chris should go home with Weston each night and one of our family members would stay at the hospital with me. The first night, Chris’ sister, Kellyn, stayed at the hospital with me.
Everything was perfect and I didn’t think anything could possibly go wrong!
